Elizabeth Anstey

Elizabeth was born 1801 in Kennford, Devonshire, England to John & Elizabeth (Page) Anstey.

She was christened on 8 October 1801 in the Anglican Church, Kennford, Devonshire, England. Her parents are listed as John & Elizabeth.

Baptism record of Elizabeth Anstey: South West Heritage Trust. "Devon Baptism Transcription." 2668A/PR/1/4 United Kingdom, Devon Baptisms. Find My Past. http://search.findmypast.com/record?id=gbprs%2fdev%2fbap%2f512098 : 2016.

Close up on Elizabeth's entry

She was married to Richard Bone on 29 June 1826 in Kennford, Devonshire, England.

Marriage Banns were submitted on 11th June 1826, 18 June 1826, and 25 June 1826 Henry Kingman was the officiating minister.

They were married by Henry Kingman, Officicating Minister. Richard was listed as batchelor and lived in the Devon Parish.  Elizabeth was listed as a spinster and also lived in the Devon Parish.  One of the witnesses was Elizabeth's father, John Anstey.  This record is signed by both Richard and Elizabeth.

They had 3 children:

Francis Bone b. 1827
William Henry Bone b. 1828
Rhoda Bone b. 1831

While Elizabeth was pregnant with her third child, Richard died. On 22 March 1831 he was buried in Kennford, Devonshire, England.

The cause of death is unknown at this time, but he was a navigator and perhaps he that had something to do with his death.  He was 29 years old.

Elizabeth remarried to John Selley.  John was a bachelor and Elizabeth is listed as a widow.  They married in Kennford Parish in Devonshire, England on 26 December 1833.  What is interesting that this time she made her mark instead of writing her name like on her first marriage certificate to Richard Bone. The marriage was by Banns.  The top of the page says 1834 but the next entry is early in the year.  I believe that this is the end of 1833 and the clerk wrote 1834 to begin the next year which started after John & Elizabeth.  I find it interesting that their banns was complete on Nov 10, but yet they did not marry until December.

I need to note here that there is another John Selley living in Devonshire at this time and he happens to be married to an Elizabeth. This is evident in the records found for children the same time as our Elizabeth is having children.

Elizabeth & John have 2 children:
 1. Eliza Selley b. 1834
2. Emma Selley b. 1835 (there was a question about another child, George b. 1835 and which child it was.  Emma is found on the 1841 census with John Selley and Susan Selley which would have been her step-mother).

Elizabeth died early.  She was buried on 31 January 1836 in Kennford, Devonshire, England.  She was 34 years old. Cause is unknown--was it illness or childbirth?

John remarried on 10 February 1838 in Kennford, Devon, England to Susannah Markin.  He is 35 years old and listed as a widower.  She is 25 and a spinster.

They had several children:

Ellen Selley
Rhoda Selley
Albert Selley
Mary Selley
Alice Selley
William Selley
Jane Selley
Joseph Selley
Frank Selley

John died in 1865 and was buried 22 February 1865 in Kenn, Devon, England

A question that I've had is what happened to Elizabeth's children from her first marriage.  They are not listed on the census records with their step-father.  At the time, John would not have needed to care for them since they were considered orphaned.

Francis Bone is 14 and living on the Bickham Farm as a laborer. http://search.findmypast.com/record?id=gbc%2f1841%2f0220%2f0008&parentid=gbc%2f1841%2f0000541427

William Henry Bone is found in a work house in the 1841 census.  He is 12 years old (listed as 10 on the census). http://search.findmypast.com/record?id=gbc%2f1841%2f0000655732

Rhoda Bone is 10 years old and living in a workhouse: http://interactive.ancestry.com/8978/DEVHO107_219_220-0324?pid=4384569&backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2f%2fcollections%2f8978%2frecords%2f4384569&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true

This is an additional proof that their mother died and they are destitute. What a sad and hard life!
